THE TEST
Fifty original questions in the style of the SHSAT ELA section, in the same two parts. Part 1 — Revising/Editing (Questions 1–9) uses two short passages (“The School Newspaper Returns” and “Jae Builds a Birdhouse”) to test sentence combining, sentence fragments, pronoun–antecedent agreement, introductory-phrase and quotation punctuation, dangling modifiers, plural possessives, verb tense consistency, and parallel structure. Part 2 — Reading Comprehension (Questions 10–50) uses six passages: two fiction stories (“Marisol’s Turn to Speak” and “The Violin in the Window”), a history passage on the building of the Brooklyn Bridge (“The Bridge That Would Not Fall”), a science passage on how honeybees communicate (“Messages in the Dance”), a 24-line poem (“First Frost”), and a social studies passage on New York City’s first subway (“Under the Streets of New York”). Reading skills include theme and main idea, key details, inference, vocabulary in context, text evidence, character change, author’s purpose and craft, text structure, point of view, cause and effect, and — for the poem — figurative language, tone, and structure. Every question in the Teacher Edition is tagged with its skill and difficulty (1/3 to 3/3), and the Blueprint & Score Tracker shows exactly which skills a student missed. Suggested time: about 90 minutes.

THE SOLUTIONS
Every solution follows the same full breakdown, in the order a strong reader thinks: what the question is really asking (or the rule being tested) first, then the exact quoted evidence from the passage, step-by-step reasoning, why EACH wrong choice is wrong with its error type named, a “Words to know” vocabulary gloss, a “Check yourself” self-check, and a “Watch out” note naming the trap. Nothing is skipped, so a student studying alone can follow every step.

PLEASE NOTE
The SHSAT is now a computer-adaptive test taken on a computer. This is a paper-based supplementary practice test: it gives students SHSAT-style questions and full worked solutions to study from, but it is NOT a simulation of the adaptive test format and not a full-length replica of the official test. All questions are 100% original practice questions written for this product; this resource is not affiliated with or endorsed by the New York City Department of Education. SHSAT is a trademark of the NYC DOE.
